Cameron Smith sets a couple of personal records winning the 150th British Open

Cameron Smith wins the Claret Jug of the 150th British Open championship, overtaking Rory McIlroy on Sunday at St. Andrews.

Smith birdied five holes in a row from Nos. 10-14, then broke from a momentary tie with Cameron Young with a 3-foot birdie putt at No. 18 to win the 150th Open Championship on Sunday at 20-under-par 268, his third PGA Tour title this season and his first major.

However, he became the first player to shoot two 64s in a major including the one in the final round to be the lowest score to win at St. Andrews.

“The Players was a big confidence booster. I knew it would just be a matter of time before winning one of these (a major championship)” Smith said during his post-round interview.

Smith sets a couple of records for his personal golf career with this victory. He becomes only the second man to win both The Players Championship and the British Open championship in the same season. Prior to him, legendary Jack Nicklaus was the only golfer to win two of the sport’s biggest championships in the same season, in 1978- coincidentally that also at the same venue.

The 28-year-old Smith also joins the club of five to win both The Players and the Open under the age of 30, alongside McIlroy, David Duval, Tiger Woods and Sandy Lyle.
