The board of Cricket Scotland has resigned while a review on institutional racism in Scottish cricket is due to be published a day after (Monday).
Commissioned by SportScotland, the report’s foundation is based on former Scotland bowler Majid Haq’s allegation to be victimized on the grounds of race. Notably, he represented Scotland more than 200 times but hasn’t appeared ever since he was sent back home from the ICC 2015 World Cup.
Alongside Haq’s claims, the report would also feature his former teammate Qasim Sheikh’s claims as both of them have been abused throughout their career. The two reported their allegations in November last year.
Aamer Anwar, the lawyer representing the two victims, said in an interview with BBC that the findings of the report would be devastating for Cricket Scotland if it proves the board dysfunctional and institutionally racist. He recommended that Haq and Sheikh should be recruited to the board so that the act can be the pioneer of change in the system.
However, the Cricket Scotland board said that it had not gone through the entire document yet. In the resignation letter, the board members apologized for the unexpected culture of racism and discrimination in Scottish cricket.
Meanwhile, Cricket Scotland’s official tweet announced that it would work in partnership with SportScotland to ensure appropriate governance, leadership & support for cricket in the country during the coming days.
