ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier: French teenager breaks world record

French teenager Gustav McKeon became the youngest cricketer to score a century in a T20 International match. The opener is aged 18 years and 280 days only.

Gustav scored 109 runs off 61 balls in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Europe qualifier match against Switzerland in Vantaa yesterday. His hard-hitting innings include five boundaries and 9 maximums. Notably, this was only the second international match of his T20I career. He made his debut against the Czech Republic and scored 76 runs off 54 balls.

Afghan batsman Hazratullah Zazai was the previous record holder to be the youngest t20I centurion. While being aged 20 years 337 days, he played an unbeaten inning of 162 runs off just 62 balls against Ireland which crowned him the honor in 2019.

However, Gustav’s record-breaking innings alone were not enough to present his team a win. None of his teammates could play a big innings to support him. As a result, they lost the thrilling match to Switzerland by one wicket.

Earlier, France won the toss and elected to bat. They completed their innings scoring 157 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. Swiss captain Faheem Nazir added 67 runs on the board off 46 balls while Ali Nayyer’s stylish 48 runs facing just 16 deliveries played the ultimate finisher role.
