Dominic Thiem’s Struggle continues as he bows out of Generali Open

Dominic Thiem failed in yet another tournament as he got knocked out of his home tournament in the quarter-finals.

2020 US Open winner, Thiem has been struggling with form since he won his maiden grand slam tournament. After a poor start in the 2021 season, he was forced to withdraw for the rest of the season due to a wrist injury. He came back in 2022 but could not replicate his old form. After a series of poor results in tournaments, he dropped out of the top 300 in ATP rankings.

The Austrian’s latest tournament was the Generali Open. With a relatively decent result in the last tournament, the Swiss Open, where he reached the semi-finals, Thiem hoped to put on a good performance before his home crowd in Austria.

He got a bye in the first round when his opponent, Richard Gasquet withdrew. In the rounds of 32 and 16, He played solid tennis beating Alexander Shevchenko (6-4, 6-2) and Sebastian Ofner (6-2, 3-6, 6-3) on his way to reaching the quarterfinals.

Thiem got matched up against the German, Yannick Hanfmann in the quarterfinals. However, the former world number 3 lost the match in three sets (6-4, 3-6, 6-4) thus ending his home tournament run in the Generali Open.

Dominic Thiem was considered the next big superstar of tennis after the “Big Four” and deservedly so. But the recent turn of events has been nothing short of a disaster for the 28-year-old Austrian. The tennis world sure does hope that The Prince of Clay shrugs off the tough time and comes back to his old form as soon as possible.
