The Pakistan Army is set to provide Qatar with security troops in the FIFA World Cup later this year. The Federal Cabinet of Pakistan has approved a draft agreement between Doha and Islamabad a day before the country’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif departed for visiting Qatar.
“The agreement aims to define the obligations of the two parties, the specific specializations, and the number of security personnel to be sent by Pakistan to participate in the security and safety operations,” according to a summary statement.
Earlier, the Qatar government asked for assistance in terms of security during the world cup and the Pakistan Army came forward with a proposal. However, it’s not clear yet why Doha sought assistance to Pakistan particularly, or what their roles would be during the event.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited Stadium 974 in Doha. He praised the Qatari government’s efforts for the event, particularly observing the luxurious football stadium representing the Qatari culture and other associated facilities. Mr Sharif departed for the two-day visit on Tuesday.
Notably, the FIFA World Cup 2022 is scheduled to take place from November 20 to December 18 in Qatar. “Al-Rihla”, the official ball of the mega event is made in Pakistan.
