Defending Champion Emma Raducanu Plays Down Fears of Injury Ahead of US Open

Emma Raducanu ignored fears of a possible injury ahead of the US Open. The defending champion struggled with her wrists during a practice session on Friday afternoon.

However, the British No. 1 confirmed later in her pre-tournament press conference that there’s nothing to worry about. “I have no concerns of, like, an issue, no,” she said.

Raducanu stopped the two hour practice session with Ekaterina Alexandrova after around 40 minutes. She moved to the court-side and was seen in tears while talking to her latest trial coach, Dmitry Tursunov.

She managed to resume the session that time but had to stop once again for a lengthier period with her physio, Will Herbert. She clearly seemed to be in discomfort. Tursunov replaced her to keep the session in action.

However, Raducanu returned after a while and played in full swing till the end without further issues.

Raducanu is scheduled to face Alize Cornet in the first round of the tournament on Tuesday. The 19-year-old British is currently the World No. 11 and British No. 1. Last year, she stunned the sporting world by winning a Grand Slam as the first qualifier ever at Flushing Meadows.

Forbes featured the teen Brit as the sixth on Forbes’ tennis rich list after earning £17.8m in one amazing year since winning the title.
