Indian Pro Golfer Anirban Lahiri Moves To LIV Golf, Says It Can Be The IPL Of Golf

Anirban Lahiri is set to make his debut in LIV Golf Invitational Series with the Boston event this week. He has become the first Indian to join the Saudi-backed tournament. The move could be the LIV Golf circuit’s acquisition to exploit the Asian market.

Lahiri compared LIV Golf with the Indian Premier League (IPL) while talking to the Hindustan Times. He remarked that IPL also received immense oppositions in the beginning but proved its potential to change cricket later on. “LIV can be the IPL of golf”, said the 35-year-old.

Notably, LIV Golf is a controversial golf tournament funded by the Saudi Arabian government. It is played in a 54-hole format, compared to 72-hole on regular tours. The field features 48 players, divided into teams of four each.

It guarantees a higher amount of prize money than other tours offer. The circuit has already lured Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Cameron Smith, Brooks Koepka, Bubba Watson, and many more prominent players.

Anirban Lahiri is an Indian professional golfer who currently plays on the Asian Tour, PGA Tour, and newly joined LIV Golf. He owns 18 professional titles including two European Tour and 7 Asian Tour titles.

The 35-year-old finished second, standing right after Cameron Smith at the PGA Tour’s flagship event ‘Players Championship’ this year.
