First established in 2007, the event quickly became a very popular annual golf tournament among Mexican PGA Tour competitors. Due to sponsorship reasons, the tournament is now officially known as the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba. It is also well-known for being Mexico’s richest golf tournament.
A total of 132 competitors initially participated in the 16th iteration of the Mayakoba Golf Classic. However, only 70 of them made the cut during the initial qualifier. The competition was staged in the traditional 71-par stroke format over four rounds.

Mayakoba Golf Classic 2022 Purse:
Mayakoba Golf Classic features a giant $8.2 million purse pool this year. For comparison, the previous year’s purse was $7.2 million. So, the increase is $1 million, or 12.2%, above last year. This implies that every position in the top 65 will receive an increase in individual position prizes over the last year.
The winner of this year’s event will receive $1.476 million in prize money. This represents exactly a 12.2% increment over last year’s champion Viktor Hovland’s reward. Hovland was gifted $1.296 million in 2021 for his successful title defense in the event.
Following the champion, the runner-up of the event will receive $893.8k prize money. While a modest reward of $565.8k awaits the 3rd place holder. These are also significant improvements over last year’s second and third-place earnings of $784.8k and $496.8k, respectively.
The increment is not just restricted to the leading places, as the players at the bottom of the leaderboard will also notice an increase in their modest winnings. The 64th position holder’s prize will go from $14,904 to $17,794 and for the 65th position, it reaches $17,630 from $14,760.
