The event is sponsored by the Saint Louis Chess Club and is annually held in honor of Rex Sinquefield and his wife Jeanne, the founders of the Saint Louis Chess Club. It takes place in Saint Louis, United States.
As the event was established in 2013, this year it will be the 9th edition. This year, the Sinquefield Cup will unveil its curtain with an Opening Ceremony at 5:30 pm on Thursday, September 1. The tournament will be played in 10 Player Round Robin format.
Defending Champion: Maxime Vachier-Lagrave
French chess grandmaster Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, also known as MVL, is the defending Champion. He is the 7th highest-rated player in history with a rating of 2819. The chess prodigy claimed the grandmaster title in 2005 when he was only 14 years old.
