Professional women’s tennis players will be competing in the Chennai Open 2022 on outdoor hard courts. Here, you will know about the tournament. 

The tournament is set to start this September with 32 single draws and 16 double draws. It will offer total prize money of $251,750 to the top players. This competition is a significant part of the 2022 WTA Tour and it would be the first WTA event to take place in India since 2008.

The tournament will take place from September 12 to September 18 in Chennai, India. The event first started in 1996 as Maharashtra Open, later it changed its name to the Chennai open.

Defending Champion: Serena Williams

As said earlier, this year the WTA event is taking place in India for the first time since 2008. Serena Williams won the last edition in 2008 when it was held as the 2008 Canara Bank Bangalore Open. She beat Switzerland’s Patty Schnyder 7–5, 6–3 in the final.

The legendary American tennis player stood on her glorious World No. 1 rank in WTA singles ranking for a record 319 weeks. Her kit is rich with 23 Grand slams singles titles. It’s the most by any player in the Open Era and the second-most right behind Margaret Court’s 24.
