The Stage Set for a New Champion in US Open 2022

The 4th round of the 2022 US Open has just finished and with it, this is now confirmed that we will crown a new grand-slam winner on September 10.

The dominance of the Big 3 over the past two decades made winning a major extremely difficult. Since Federer won his first major in 2003 Wimbledon, he, along with Rafel Nadal and Novak Djokovic have won 63 out of 79 grand slam championships. Only five people achieved the rare feat of winning a grand slam title since Marat Safin won the 2005 Australian Open.

Other than the Big 3, only Andy and Stan Wawrinka boast of multiple major titles with both of them winning thrice. Among the next generation, Dominick Thiem and Daniil Medvedev managed to win one each.

Historically, the US Open is seemingly the most regular stage for crowning new champions. The last two editions of the US Open have given us two new champions with Thiem in 2020 and Medvedev in 2021. This year we are about to witness a similar story as Rafael Nadal has just been knocked out of the tournament losing to Frances Tiafor in the 4th round of the US Open 2022.

One of the eight players who are set to compete in the quarter-finals will win their maiden grand-slam championship next Sunday. Among the remaining players, Carlos Alcaraz is the top seed. Next is Casper Ruud. Both of them have a chance to become the world number 1 in the ATP rankings, provided they win the tournament. The lowest seed still in the tournament is Karen Kachanov.

The US Open 2022 quarterfinals matchup are as follows:

  • Nick Kyrgios(23) vs Karen Kachanov (27)
  • Matteo Berrettini (13) vs. Casper Ruud (5)
  • Jannik Sinner (11) vs. Carlos Alcaraz (3)
  • Andrey Rublev (9) vs. Frances Tiafoe (22)
