Bubba Watson left the PGA Tour and joined the Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf Invitational Series. The Telegraph reported the possibility of the switch on Friday.
The official announcement was expected to come during the LIV Golf takes place at Bedminster. The 3rd and final round will wrap up the tournament on Sunday.
Watson, the two-time Masters champion, has been out due to knee injury since a T-30 at the PGA Championship in May. He will be elected captain of one of the LIV golf teams in the upcoming Labor Day Weekend tournament.
It is scheduled to take place from September 2-4 at The International in Bolton, Massachusetts. However, he might not be able to play until 2023 due to his torn meniscus.
LIV Golf is controversial as the tournament is backed by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund. However, Watson thinks that they’ve been trying to change. Regarding the reason behind his interest in this move, he said, “My wife loved it. It’s a cliché, but I love growing the game of golf.”
LIV Golf is managing to snatch talented players from its rival PGA Tour. Many top-notch golfers have already switched to LIV Golf. The list includes Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau and Sergio Garcia.
Reportedly, Watson will earn over £48.6 million in LIV Golf while he earned more than $48 million despite being in his 17th season on the PGA Tour.
